KNOW YOUR SPRAY GUN.
For many WALTHER PILOT spray guns, there are several adjustments that can be made at the spray gun which control how effectively your particular material is atomized. These adjustments include the shape of the spray pattern, the fluid spray volume, and the amount of atomization. There are different controls present depending if you have a manual or automatic spray gun. (See below for pictures of knob locations on different gun model types)
On our manual spray guns there are generally three knobs that control your atomization parameters, which you can use to fine tune your spray pattern. The Spray Pattern Shape Control knob controls the amount of air that flows into the horns of the air cap. Use this knob to control the shape (or "flatness") of the spray. The Fluid Control Knob controls how much the material needle travels back and forth in the spray gun when you pull the trigger, thus controlling material flow volume to the fluid nozzle. The Main Air Control Knob controls how much air flows into the spray gun. You can use this knob to completely cut off the air that is flowing into the gun.
Note that if you are using a pressure system for material supply then you should set the desired fluid pressure in the material pressure tank and subsequently leave your Fluid Control Knob set to the fully open position.
On our internal control automatic spray guns, there are also two knobs which you can use to fine tune your spray pattern properties. The Wide/Flat Jet Air Control Knob is for adjusting wide/flat jet properties (the air flowing into the horns of the air cap) and the Round Jet Air Control Knob is for adjusting round jet properties. The Round Jet Air Control Knob on the automatic spray guns also acts as the Main Air Control Knob that controls the amount of atomization air that flows into the gun and subsequently, into the center of the air cap. For external control guns, the fine tuning of the spray pattern is done by an outside regulator.
